People with amputations experience a unique comprehensive approach to rehabilitation. A combination of expert clinicians and state of the art equipment and facilities, delivered across a continuum of care, results in meaningful outcomes for each individual served.
Madonna's Amputation Program is accredited by CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission, as part of its Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation and Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation Programs. During its most recent survey, CARF surveyors reported the following regarding Madonna's program:

Care begins with pre-operative assessment and consultation, and continues through a post-acute inpatient rehabilitation program which may include any or all of the following components:
- Long Term Acute Care- for individual who have complex medical issues or who have difficulty with wound healing
- Acute Rehabilitation- for individuals who are ready for intensive inpatient rehabilitation aimed at preparing them for discharge to a community setting
- Transitional Care Rehabilitation- for individuals who are not able to tolerate intensive rehabilitation, do not have intensive medical needs, and require a longer, less intensive approach to rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation Day Program- for those who have received their prosthesis and are now ready for intensive prosthetic training that includes community re-entry, work re-entry and other higher level skills
- TherapyPlus Outpatient- for patients who need less intensive or single discipline therapy to strengthen or improve function
- Structured Independence- for patients who have completed outpatient therapy at Madonna and would benefit from structured exercise programming at ProActive Health & Fitness
Key components of Madonna's Amputation Program include:
- Medical Care Each patient's care is directed by a physician who specializes in physiatry (physical medicine and rehabilitation) and/or a physician with specialization in internal medicine. Specialized care is also available for a variety of associated conditions, such as Diabetes management, pain management, preventative care for the residual limb, cardiovascular management, wound care, skin care, and nutrition.
- Rehabilitation Nursing Rehabilitation nursing staff are available 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Staff are specially trained in providing care for the residual limb as well as in reinforcing self-care and mobility tasks.
- Therapy Physical and/or occupational therapy for strengthening, mobility, prosthetic training, self-care and community re-entry.
- Prosthetic/Orthotic Providers Prosthetic providers, who provide consultation regarding use of a prosthetic device (artificial limb) are available and integrated into treatment.
- Gait Training Use of technology such as the Body Weight Support Treadmill and Gait & Motion Analysis are useful tools for perfecting gait.
- Diagnostic Services A variety of diagnostic services are available either on-site or by arrangement with other medical facilities in Lincoln, which address the following: Vascular disease, Diabetes management, trauma, and oncology.
- Limb Loss Education Patients and their family members/care takers are provided with training on a variety of topics, including: adaptive techniques and equipment for completing activities of daily living (ADL), coping with limb loss, appropriate use of assistive devices, community re-entry, community resources and how to access them, techniques for desensitization of the residual limb, donning/doffing a prosthesis, driving, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and wellness, health risks, home modifications, minimizing potential hazards in the home, nutrition and hydration, personal life roles and participation, mediciations, mobility, managing phantom limb pain, creating/maintaining a portable health profile, prevention of secondary complications associated with limb loss, proper fit of a prosthesis, prosthetic options, self-advocacy, skin care for the unaffected limb, care of the residual limb, pressure wrapping, return to work, care of incisional wounds or other open areas, scar management of the residual limb, and management of diabetes where appropriate.
- Peer Support Madonna has identified persons with limb loss who are available to talk with indiviudals who have recently experienced limb loss, and is also involved with a community based support group.
- Home Assessments An Occupational Therapist with specialized training in home modifications may visit the patient's home to assess for accessibility and will discuss recommendations for modifications.
- Counseling Rehabilitation psychology staff and spiritual services staff are available to assist patients and families with coping strategies as they adjust to their limb loss. Screening for issues related to chemical use/abuse is provided on-site and Madonna has a relationship with a community provider should chemical use/abuse counseling be necessary.
- Sports & Recreation Participation in a variety of adaptive sports and recreational outings can be integrated into therapy or just for fun.
