During the fiscal year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital discharged 203 inpatients and admitted 490 new outpatients with brain injury.
Several standard measurements are used to assess the outcomes of persons served.
Inpatient Outcomes: These outcomes are compared with national acute rehabilitation benchmarks compiled by the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association (AMRPA) database called erehabdata. The outcomes described below are for patients discharged from Madonna's Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

Individuals with traumatic brain injury had higher acuity than the region, admitted 4 days later, and stayed about 7 days longer. Madonna discharged its patients with brain injury with significantly higher functional scores (FIM*). MRH discharged more patients to a community setting and fewer patients to acute care than the regional benchmark.
82% of inpatients rated their overall experience as "Excellent" and 95% rated "Excellent" or "Good". 100% of patients who responded to a telephone survey completed 3 months after discharge said they had maintained the gains they made during their stay at Madonna.
* FIM is a 7-point tool used by rehabilitation hospitals throughout the nation to assess a patient's function in 18 areas, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition. Maximum score on FIM is 126.
Outpatient Outcomes: There are no national benchmarks for outpatient brain injury programs. The outcomes described below are outcomes for patients with brain injury discharged between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.
RDP: Patients made an average FAM** gain of 18.1 points and at discharge had an average total score of 185.1/210 or "modified independent" level of function.
Outpatient: Patients receiving traditional, single service outpatient care were discharged with an average total score of 44.7/49 on an abbreviated FIM+FAM tool, or at a "modified independent" level of funciton.
Outpatient/RDP Length of Stay On average, outpatients with brain injury are seen for 20 days. More specifically, the average number of visits by discipline include:
Physical Therapy: 135
Occupational Therapy: 148
Speech Therapy: 107
Satisfaction: 84% of RDP and traditional outpatients served with brain injury rated their overall program as "Excellent" and 95% as "Excellent" or "Good". 100% of those served either "Strongly Agreed" or "Agreed" they would recommend Madonna TherapyPlus to friends and family.
** FIM+FAM is a 7-point tool used by many comprehensive outpatient providers throughout the nation to assess a patient's function. It includes the 18 areas identified in the FIM, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition, plus an additional 12 areas including such things as Employability, Community Re-Entry, and Car Transfers. Maximum score on FAM is 210.
