Burn Program: Program Description

The goal of Madonna's Burn Program is to help each individual return to the highest level of functioning and independence as possible, improving the overall quality of life for each individual physically, emotionally and socially. Burn rehabilitation includes comprehensive, multidisciplinary specialized care that may last over an extended period of time.

Key Program Features include:

  • Treatment by a consistent team of clinicians who each have special training in burn rehabilitation facilitates quick responses to any problems or issues, resulting in faster healing and functional improvement

  • Designated rooms ensure privacy and easy access to exclusive showers, decrease the risk of infection and preserve each individual's dignity.

  • A pre-admission team visits each patient during their acute care stay to ease the transition to rehabilitation, reducing anxiety for patients and their family members, and ensuring effective continuity of care and consistent use of appropriate medical equipment and supplies.

  • Comprehensive educational packets are provided and work as a supplement to verbal instruction with demonstrations for patients and their family members. Multimedia resources are available and provide long-term resources for concerns that may arise after discharge.

  • Comprehensive non-surgical scar management techniques, such as manual scar maturation processes and tissue mobilization are taught to patients and their caregivers to continue outside therapy sessions for the best results.

  • Consultation with community based therapists or others, such as school system, for easier transition back to each individual's home community and life roles.

  • Depending upon the specific needs of each individual patient, the burn team is made up of members from several different disciplines, including:

    • Physiatrist

    • Physical Therapist

    • Speech Therapist

    • Recreational Therapist

    • Social Worker/Case Manager

    • Infection Control Nurse

    • Rehabilitation Nurse

    • Occupational Therapist

    • Psychology

    • Nutrition Therapist

    • Respiratory Therapists

    • Spiritual Care Leaders
