Patient Care

Burn Program: Who We Serve

Background: Many individuals with moderate to severe burns require rehabilitation to regain mobility and self-care skills. While most of their wounds are healed prior to coming to rehabilitation, these individuals often have lost significant range of motion and strength in their legs, arms and hands/fingers due to long periods of time with open wounds, splinting, and sometimes multiple surgeries for skin grafting procedures. This loss of range of motion and strength then impacts their ability to perform self-care, walk, and participate in their normal roles. The role of rehabilitation is to decrease these impairments and increase activity and participation abilities, while maintaining the integrity of their skin.

Levels of Care: Patients with burns are served throughout several levels of care at Madonna. For patients who have multiple medical issues and require complex nursing care, the Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) is the best option. Patients who are ready for intensive rehab and whose medical issues are less intense, are served on the Acute Rehabilitation (AR) level. Many patients choose to continue to receive rehabilitation on an outpatient basis at one of several Madonna TherapyPlus locations.

Ages: Madonna serves people of all ages with burns, from as young as infant/toddlers to senior citizens.

Geographic Area: As one of the only rehabilitation hospitals to be CARF accredited and also have a formal Burn Program, Madonna serves people from a wide region.

Volumes: Madonna serves approximately 10 inpatients with burns each year.
