During the fiscal year July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital discharged 683 inpatients and admitted 2043 new outpatients with orthopedic conditions.
Several standard measurements are used to assess the outcomes of persons served.
Inpatient Outcomes: The outcomes below are compared with national acute rehabilitation benchmarks compiled by the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association (AMRPA) database called erehabdata. The outcomes described below are for patients with all types of orthopedic conditions discharged from Madonna's Acute Rehabilitation (ARU) and Sub-Acute Rehabilitation (SAR) Units between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007.

* FIM is a 7-point tool used by rehabilitation hospitals throughout the nation to assess a patient's function in 18 areas, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition. Maximum score on FIM is 126.
Madonna discharged more patients to community settings as the national benchmark and fewer to acute care despite admitting them, on average, 3 days earlier than the nation. Patients stayed 1 day longer and were able to discharge with significantly higher functional scores (FIM).
95% of inpatients rated their overall experience as "Excellent" or "Good". 97% of patients who responded to a telephone survey completed 3 months after discharge said they had maintained the gains they made during their stay at Madonna.
Outpatient Outcomes: There are no national benchmarks for outpatient orthopedic programs. Madonna tracks orthopedic outcomes by looking at the amount of pain reduction as well as functional gain made between admission and discharge. Patients use a simple 11-point analog scale to rate their pain. A 5-point scale is used to rate ability to perform several activities for the functional portion of the outcomes measurement. The outcomes described below are for outpatients who discharged between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007. The goal is 20 points combined change.
