Stroke Program: Outcomes

During the fiscal year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital discharged 287 inpatients and admitted 217 new outpatients with stroke. Several standard measurements are used to assess the outcomes of persons served.

Inpatient acute rehabilitation outcomes are compared with national acute rehabilitation benchmarks compiled by the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association (AMRPA) database called erehabdata.

The outcomes described below are for inpatients and outpatients with stroke served between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

  • Discharge to Community On AR, 56.1% of patients with stroke discharged to community settings, which was slightly less than the region and nation. Madonna serves patients who are more impaired and medically complex as indicated by a higher case mix index than the comparison groups. On LTACH, 49% of patients with stroke served were either discharged to community or to AR for continued rehabilitation. 100% of stroke patients served on SAR and 49% of stroke patients on LTACH discharged either to community or to AR for further rehabilitation.

  • Average Length of Stay Inpatients with stroke stayed an average of 23 days on LTACH and 21 days on ARU.

  • Functional Gain Stroke patients made excellent functional gains, as measured by 20 points on the FIM scale which is the same as national and regional benchmarks. Madonna's stroke patients discharged at a higher functional level (75.5) than the nation (72.1) and region (73.6). On average, stroke patients achieved 74% of the goals set for them at the time of admission.

  • Predicted OutcomesOn average, inpatients with stroke achieve 74% of the goals established on admission.

  • Inpatient Satisfaction Across all levels of care 81% of patients with stroke rated their program overall as "Excellent" and 98.6% as either "Excellent" or "Good".

  • Maintenance of Gains Across all levels of care, 97% of inpatients with stroke who responded to a survey stated they maintained gains 3 months after discharge.

  • Outpatient - Functional Gains 40 individuals with stroke completed their rehabilitation day program, making great functional gains as measured by 21.4 points on the FIM+FAM tool.**

Traditional outpatients with stroke, on average, scored 37.7/42 on a modified FIM+FAM tool, which is a "modified independent" level.

  • Outpatient - Length of Stay On average, outpatients with stroke were seen 23 days and received the following visits by discipline:

    Physical Therapy: 140
    Occupational Therapy: 143
    Speech Therapy: 82

  • Outpatient Satisfaction 80% of outpatients with stroke rated the program overall as "Excellent" and 98% as either "Excellent" or "Good". 85% strongly agreed they would recommend to family and friends.

* FIM is a 7-point tool used by rehabilitation hospitals throughout the nation to assess a patient's function in 18 areas, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition. Maximum score on FIM is 126.
** The FIM+FAM uses the FIM (above) plus 12 additional items which address higher level skills such as community access and school or work re-entry.
