Stroke Program: Who We Serve

  • The following information is based on the patients with stroke served at Madonna between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

  • Background: Madonna's Stroke Rehabilitation Program is designed to meet the needs of persons with all types of stroke. 39% of patients served at Madonna had a right brain stroke, affecting the left side of the body, 41% had a left brain stroke, affecting the right side of their body, and 20% had a stroke which affected other areas such as both sides, or affected their balance and coordination.

  • Ages: Madonna serves people of all ages with stroke. The youngest was 7 years old and the oldest 94 years, averaging 70 years old. 29 patients were under the age of 50, including 2 patients 18 years old or younger.

  • Geographic Area: 62% of inpatients served with stroke lived in communities outside Lincoln, including 39 individuals from 6 states outside Nebraska.

  • Volumes: Madonna served a total of 287 inpatients with Stroke. A majority of the patients (253) were served on the Acute Rehabilitation Hospital (AR), 29 patients with stroke, many who had other medical complications, were served on the Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) and 5 were served on the Transitional Care Unit (TCU).

  • Outpatients On an outpatient basis, a total of 217 new patients with stroke were served. Of these, 41 were served in the Rehabilitation Day Program and the rest received services at TherapyPlus, Main Campus. Of thse, 39% were seen as a continuation of their program after inpatient rehabilitation at Madonna.
