Nutrition: Make smart choices every day
The best way to give your body the balance it needs is to eat a variety of nutrient-packed foods every day. A healthy eating plan is one that:
- Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.
- Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts.
- Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and added sugars.
The good news is that it is within your power to find a balance that provides good nutrition for your body. A good place to start is by asking Samantha Beaubier, ProActive's registered dietitian to help you understand the nutrients that make up a balanced diet and why they're so important.
You have several opportunities to learn about balanced nutrition at ProActive. Group education or healthy cooking classes are offered monthly, and it's complementary to ProActive members and guests. Samantha lends her food and nutrition know-how to many ProActive wellness programs, such as LifeBalance for Wellness, LifeBalance for Heart and LifeBalance for Health.
Additionally, two healthy cooking classes are offered per month -- one in the morning and one in the evening. These classes have unique themes so you'll never get bored while learning! In class, you'll satisfy your hunger to learn with food samples, recipes and educational materials. The healthy cooking classes are $5 for members and $10 for non-members.
To participate, stop by or call the Front Desk. Specific meeting days and times are listed in The Source, ProActive's monthly newsletter, or you can learn more by asking at the Front Desk or contacting Samantha at (402) 486-7785.
