Outstanding research improves rehabilitation
The Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering exists to conduct applied research that identifies best practices in order to improve rehabilitation outcomes so that each person can participate fully in life. The outcomes of this research guide the development of quality programs for individuals experiencing activity and participation restrictions, as well as for individuals seeking to achieve optimal health, growth and development. Emphasizing partnerships of clinicians, researchers, students and individuals served, the Institute embodies a culture of hope and a passionate commitment to life-long learning. The Institute is a premier teaching environment serving people of all abilities and serves as a catalyst for changes in thought and practice at the national level. Research in the Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering bridges health, academic, business, governmental and disability communities to initiate and develop productive collaborations that advance its mission and bring value to its partners.
The Madonna Model serves as a framework for the design and delivery of comprehensive, coordinated rehabilitation. It is also a method to guide the design, conduct and analysis of contextually-based clinical rehabilitation research.

- The Research Institute currently includes three core research Centers of Excellence:
- Movement and Neurosciences Center of Excellence:
The Movement and Neurosciences Center of Excellence is dedicated to conducting biomechanical, physiological and neurocognitive research to enhance the independence and quality of life of persons with and without disabilities in order to maximize full participation in life activities such as walking and exercising. Research in the Movement Center is facilitated by a state-of-the-art Gait and Motion Analysis Lab, including twelve Oqus digital infrared cameras, four force platforms, a 10-channel surface EMG system, and a computerized pressure mapping system for the feet.
- Communication Center of Excellence: Research in the Communication Center of Excellence focuses on developing and improving technology and treatment strategies to reduce the functional limitations of individuals with complex communication disorders. The Communication Center specializes in research in the areas of assistive technology, augmentative and alternative communication, telehealth, and motor speech disorders.
- Clinical Informatics Center of Excellence: The goal of the Clinical Informatics Center of Excellence is to advance rehabilitation science and practice through the identification and refinement of innovative applications of information technology to enhance rehabilitation processes and outcomes.
